Byrne says the aerodynamics of the F2004 will be altered for Melbourne
Ferrari's chief designer Rory Byrne has promised major changes to the look of the new F2004 before it takes part in its maiden grand prix at Melbourne in March.
Although the car was only unveiled this morning (Monday) at its Maranello factory, Byrne says there will be big changes on the aerodynamic front before the opening race weekend. The car had been rumoured to appear with something approaching a Williams-style front wing, but this did not materialise.
Ferrari is expected to develop a new front wing assembly, plus new turning vanes (instead of its barge board set-up) and revamped rear-end aerodynamics over the next month of testing.
"In order to continue making steps forward, every area effecting aerodynamics has been further developed and many new components will be introduced during our test programme in February," said Byrne. "The car we'll race in Melbourne will look different in many areas to the one that you see here.
"The fundamental design philosophy of the F2004 is the same as its predecessors in terms of optimising its aerodynamic efficiency, lowering the centre of gravity height and maximising performance on the Bridgestone tyres and 053 engine. Every area of the car has been revised to take a step forward on performance. Almost every component has been redesigned.
"We have taken a new approach to the use of materials for the gearbox casing and rear crash structure, which has resulted in considerable weight saving. There are no fundamental changes to the chassis structure, but it is completely new in terms of shape as a result of its aerodynamic requirements," he added.
